Volume 1 in the series: Drawings and Graphics, edited by Jacqueline Morreau. The artists in this series have each developed a particular language with which to express a personal understanding of the world in which he lives. Martin Wiener's drawings make one aware at all times of that tension between what a line is doing and what it is describing. He plays with this idea Constantly, but it is especially clear in his series of autographs, where the line teases the viewer by its many functions. One moment it is a line in its role as a written language, next it is a line as line, but it is also a portrait of the person whose signature it is. Still further, it is not a portrait as likeness only, but refers to characteristic attributes of the subject. An artist whose work is often witty and delightful, he sometimes also provokes strong reactions. Agitators threw a bomb into a gallery hosting an exhibition of his works in 1984. You'll enjoy these works!
