From Library Journal:
This is one of those rare reference books that entertains as much as it informs. An ambitious undertaking, it offers entries on every song recorded by Johnny Cash over his 45-year career. The more than 2600 entries include songwriter, producer, recording dates and locations, musicians, and release dates. A list of the artists who recorded with Cash is a "who's who" of 20th-century American music, from Mother Maybelle Carter to Carl Perkins to Bob Dylan to Steve Earle. Well-loved songs like "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues" have over 30 entries apiece, while the author's personal favorite, an obscure B-side from 1969 called "See Ruby Fall," rates a lone listing. Smith, who has published previous discographies of Cash and Waylon Jennings, presents the material simply and lets its comprehensiveness and historical magnitude overwhelm the reader. While the price tag may put off smaller libraries, this book is essential for all comprehensive music collections.ADan Bogey, Clearfield Cty. P.L. Federation, Curwensville, PA
