The fourteenth volume in Scarecrow’s Historical Dictionaries of U.S. Politics and Political Eras, the Historical Dictionary of United States Political Parties is a revision of the first edition, published in 2000. Updated to include the 2008 election, the dictionary seeks to cover all major and minor U.S. parties, past and present, including all of their leaders, presidents, vice presidents, congressional party leaders, and national party chairs. Also included are political party jargon as well as terms related to the parties’ inner workings. Cloakroom, Crossover voting, Floor leader, List system, Open convention, and Packing the galleries are all defined. Most of the entries, however, are biographical. In addition to the A–Z section, the volume contains a chronology that begins in 1787 and ends on January 20, 2009. Included as well are an extended introductory essay and 15 appendixes, which include listings of presidents, vice presidents, floor leaders of the Senate and House, and national committee chairs, among other useful information. Also provided at the end of the volume are a bibliography and an extensive listing of Internet resources.
