This guide, a supplement to the A.L.A.'s Guide for Written Collection Policy Statements, is meant to assist librarians, both music specialists and generalists, who are responsible for writing collection development policies for music collections in academic, conservatory, and public libraries. It includes a checklist for writing a collection development policy, an outline of elements with examples from actual collections, and an example of a complete collection development policy.

Amanda Maple is Music Librarian at the Pennsylvania State University. Jean Morrow is Director of Libraries at the New England Conservatory of Music and Professor at Simmons College.
Think spiral curriculum. Beginning with the general, this guide discusses collection development policies within a music context (recordings, scores, editions, etc.). Next a hodgepodge of existing music collection development policy examples (St. Olaf College, Hartt School, and others) is worked into a sample policy. And finally, the specific a complete policy from the Middlebury College Music Library, VT, written by Jerry McBride. Maple (music librarian, Pennsylvania State Univ.) and Morrow (director of libraries, New England Conservatory of Music and professor at Simmons Coll., Boston) hope the Guide "will serve as a practical aid to music selectors writing or revising collection policies." And indeed, it will. Intended as a supplement to the American Library Associations's Guide for Written Collection Policy Statements, the Guide's focus upon music collection development policies is unique. Its concise and thorough treatment of this often neglected document will be a welcome addition to the neophyte as well as the veteran. Recommended for large public, academic, and music libraries.
