Synopsis

The Republic of India is the second most populous, the seventh largest by geographical area, and has the fourth largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity in the world. Surjit Mansingh recently retired as professor of International Politics at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and teaches part-time at the American University.

Intended as "an introduction to Indian history and civilization," this edition of a title in the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East series has brief entries describing people; places; events; institutions; political parties; and social, cultural, and religious issues. Coverage now extends from the Indus Valley civilization of around 2700-1500 BCE to 1994; there are 100 new entries, most of them pertaining to the last 10 years. Some new maps have been added, and the bibliography and appended material, such as the list of major economic reforms, have been brought up-to-date.
