Grade 2-6?A large, handsome format adorned with elegant, framed and unframed paintings distinguishes this collection of 52 of the more familiar Bible stories. Based on the Douay Bible and well translated, the writing is smooth, interesting, and colloquial, using short, lively sentences. The stories themselves, however, are condensed to just a few paragraphs, and the subjects for inclusion are very selective. The Old Testament portion highlights the Creation, the flood, Cain and Abel, Joseph, Abraham, and other standard favorites. The New Testament section presents a well-integrated narrative of Jesus's life, including some of the miracles and teachings, with brief selections from Acts and Revelation at the end. An interesting comparative chronological table showing Biblical events and general history is included. The artwork, with its slender, expressive figures; glowing colors; and beautiful, decorative composition, is a perfect complement to the text.
