Surveys the paintings and drawings of Edward Lear and discusses his career as a writer and artist

Best known for his nonsense writings, Lear did moving landscapes and bird paintings and was also a prolific book illustrator, composer and pianist. He left behind 9000 watercolors and some 300 oil paintings. Determined to take adventurous risks to prove that his life need not be ruled by his epilepsy, Lear turned out landscapes that, like his travel diaries, were firsthand reports of weird and wonderful places, from Albanian mountain villages to Amalfi, Tivoli, Jerusalem and Benares to the wild beauty of the Ionian Islands. His indelible pictures of exotic parrots, peacocks, owls and cranes, which bespeak a love of nature, have a kinship to his nonsense lyrics with their message of tolerance and empathy. Based on an exhibition in London and New York, this wholly delightful volume demonstrates that Lear's varied work was all of a piece.
