The Musee d'Orsay, Paris's new museum, was established to relieve overcrowding of the Jeu de Paume and to provide for a reappraisal of 19th-century art. Located in a renovated railway station, it has the space (and light) to exhibit the incredible national holdings of art that span the years 1848-1910. This book takes us on a tour of the galleries, which are arranged to give an art historical survey of the period. Paintings predominate but are shown in their relation to sculpture and the decorative arts, photography and early cinematography. A refreshing change from the usual "museum masterpiece" books that focus on individual pieces in isolation from surrounding works and the art of their time. With excellent color illustrations. Lynell A. Morr, John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art Lib., Sarasota, Fla.
