This is a photographic "Who's Who' of contemporary artists, famous, infamous and unknown. The gimmickto pose the artists with their piecesworks well. We see George Segal behind sheer curtains at a window, standing next to a white plaster cast figure; Alex Katz next to a cut-out, the artist almost slimmer than the work; Donald Judd's head bobbing above one of his monoliths; and Mark di Suvero, standing, seemingly in despair, before one of his giant metal constructions. The essay by King, director of the Carnegie-Mellon University Art Gallery, has some good insightsthe 85 photos are black and white because "the sensuousness of color would interfere with the information." There are artists' statements, too, and some are intriguing. For example, Judy Levy cries and gets headaches if she does not paint.
