Whether one is interested in seeing Marlene Dietrich movie props, Cold War artifacts, or learning the grisly connection between sugar beets and Zyklon-B gas (at the Sugar Museum), this nicely illustrated guidebook to 30 off-the-beaten-track museums in the new German capital supplies all the necessary details. The "Little-Known Museums" series highlights small museums in European capitals. The Berlin volume joins earlier installments on London (1997) and Paris (LJ 10/15/96) in providing comprehensive coverage of three dozen specialized museums. Kaplan, author of all three, is a Paris-based journalist who runs a cultural tourism company. She brings just the right amount of historical and logistic insight to these guides. Each of the institutions covered is a gem. All types of artistic, cultural, and historical museums are included, ranging from those highlighting the work of a single person (the Kathe Kollowitz Museum) through the applied arts (the Bauhaus Archive) to castles, museums of film, and more. Contact information and directions are provided, along with an overall spotting map. The commentary on each site, guided by Kaplan's personal visits and enthusiasm, averages about six pages. Color photos shot specifically for this book illustrate each site. The quality of content and production will keep this guide useful for years to come.AMegan S.
