Toward the end of the 19th century, some of America's wealthy families sought refuge from the pressures of urban life by summering in handsomely appointed lodges in New York's Adirondack Mountains. The furniture they used was in the centuries-old rustic tradition that exploited the contour and form of wood in its natural state; the result blended seemingly contradictory desires for wilderness and for comfort. The scholarly text testifies to its author's considerable knowledge, but the most arresting feature is the handsome depiction of some of the most "fantastic," yet elegant, furniture forms imaginable.
