Grade 4 Up --Introducing children to surrealism in modern art is a challenge taken up with novelty and verve in this French import. The focus is on Magritte's "The Double Secret," painted in 1927, which contains a human head with its face set apart to reveal a cascade of sleigh bells within the mind's interior. The painting is disassembled and rearranged by the authors while questions are posed about the possible meanings of what readers see. The brief text leads to reproductions of five other surrealistic compositions by the artist. A one-page commentary on Magritte and his intentions completes the presentation. The first and last pages of the book are cut-out panels attached to the endpapers that can be placed over various parts of the book to create either a framed picture or a new Magritte head with a variety of mental contents. This innovative approach to modern art bears comparison with Douglas and Elizabeth MacAgy's Going for a Walk with a Line (Doubleday, 1959; o.p.). The book design is exceptionally fine, and the quality of the paper and the clarity of the art reproductions are exemplary. The cut-out flaps may well disintegrate with many circulations, but the book is not likely to face heavy use.
