This large, handsome book spotlights 187 photographs taken over a 20-year period beginning in 1973. The colorful and dramatic photos by prize-winning Spanish photographer Garcia Rodero are the main feature, though a lengthy introduction and detailed notes by novelist Caballero Bonald provide background information of significant depth. This is not just another pretty coffee-table book. The photos depict much blood (mostly from bulls), fire, dust, and sweat. The scenes contain familiar elements of Spanish culture and are unlikely to change preconceived notions about Spain, but they do offer vivid and fascinating details. In particular, the blending of pagan and Christian traditions comes across strongly. Highly recommended for public libraries and collections focusing on folklore, religious studies, and Spanish culture.
