Find out what role Marc Chagall played in the history of 20th-century art. This fine volume captures the distinctive creativity of a painter whose images were heavily influenced by literature, religious symbols, and folk tales from his native Russia. You'll enjoy more than 60 reproductions of one of the most original and imaginative geniuses of 20th-century art.
Despite a life buffeted by war and revolution, by exile and official condemnation in Russia, Marc Chagall preserved in his work a sense of peace and beauty. This comprehensive and incisive exploration of one of the greatest and most beloved artists of this century brings together the writings of art critics, the reminiscences of family, friends, and colleagues, and Chagall's own words to create a striking portrait of an artist who delighted the world with his unique brand of creativity. Chagall: A Retrospective traces the artist's personal and artistic development from his humble beginnings in the Russian town of Vitebsk to his continuing contributions to world art at the time of his death at the age of ninety-seven.

Hardback. Condition: Good. One of a series of monographs introducing the work of 20th-century artists, this text is devoted to Marc Chagall. Chagall developed a romantic and personal naive style based on themes from Eastern European Jewish life and Russian and Jewish folklore. He was strongly influenced by the brilliant colours of Fauvism and by the new sense of space of Cubism. Chagall eventually established himself as an important force in modern art by the sheer power and fertility of his imagination, and his immense creative output. Much of his work is related to literature, including his many illustrations for the Bible, the fables of La Fontaine, and Gogol's "Dead Souls". In 1945 he designed the sets for Stravinsky's ballet "The Firebird". His other works include two vast murals for the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, and stained-glass windows representing the Tribes of Israel at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem.
