About the Author:
John Wallace has illustrated many picture books for young children. He lives in England.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3–In this collection, 30 poems are arranged to reflect the cycle of a day, from waking in the morning, spending time at school, and playing afternoon games to sharing nighttime rituals. Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Swing" shares pages with newer verse, such as Coral Rumble's "Toothpaste Trouble." Molly Bang's "Ten, Nine, Eight" is included, as is Emily Dickinson's "A Word." The selections are thoughtfully arranged and humorous topics are followed by more contemplative themes. Anonymous limericks come together with ancient haiku and Gaelic lullabies, and poems focus on such day-to-day topics as grandmothers brushing their granddaughters' hair, the first day of school, jumping on the bed, and the glory of a new day. A glossary of British terms is included. Wallace's charming watercolors accompany each poem. Boys and girls of different ethnicities are represented in the illustrations and humorous touches add whimsy and delight. Display this book with Lee Bennett Hopkins's The Sky Is Full of Song (HarperCollins, 1983; o.p.) and introduce it to parents who want to share poetry with their young children.–Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System, Madison, WI
