Susan Meyers raises champion show dogs and is the author of the best-selling Everywhere Babies, which is about to be released in a board book edition (9/04). David Walker is a noted illustrator of gift cards and other stationery and gift items. This is his second picture book. Booklist called his first "charming" and "sweetly expressive." He lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The oversize format, with its clean, white pages, provides the perfect backdrop for the cavorting charmers. With the accent on shape and color (some of the dogs are blue or purple), the pictures show puppies nursing, being taken to new homes, gallivanting in the park, going to obedience school, and winning prizes. Even the most mundane puppy habits are captured: "Leaving puddles on the floor / sneaking out the kitchen door." That example of the rhyme shows the simplicity Meyers employs in a text so well structured that almost any adult (or new reader) can prance through with natural, bouncy enthusiasm. A brief artist's note explains that the paintings began with a pencil sketch and then were layered with acrylic color.
