Synopsis
For more than ten years, wildlife photographer Steve Bloom traveled all over the world, roaming through the jungles of Borneo, the African savannahs, and the frozen banks of Antarctica to assemble this dazzling collection of photographs of animals in their natural environments. With an international range and an eye and ear for what kids want to know about animals, the photographs and information in Untamed bring to life a vast panorama of animal diversity, and of the landscapes, climates, and habitats in which they live. Children will experience animals up-close; the serene gaze of a gorilla relaxing in the trees; a shark jumping in midair to catch its prey; a Siberian tiger traipsing through the snow in search of food; and penguins congregating on an ice floe. Bloom's anthropomorphic approach reveals rage, tenderness, and even humour in his subjects, capturing those fleeting moments when the gap between animal and human seems to disappear altogether. About the Author
Steve Bloom was born in South Africa in 1953. He first used the camera to document life in his native country during the 1970s. In the mid-nineties he created Steve Bloom Images, a wildlife stock agency and a fine print gallery, with the objective of offering clients high-quality imagery of a standard suitable for discerning advertising, design, and editorial agencies. Since then he has won a number of awards for his photography.

Gr. 4-7. With astonishing color photos Bloom took in the wild, beautifully reproduced on thick, glossy paper, this oversize volume captures animals in their natural habitat, from polar bears on an ice floe to a huge herd of migrating gnu on the east African savannah. One amazing shot shows a great white shark leaping out of the ocean; it took Bloom 15 days to get the picture. The exclamatory text, written by Christian Havard, is too cute and condescending ("the male peacock is a regular Casanova"; some animals have "really weird" sleeping habits), though Havard does add some interesting commentary and connections about habitat, tools, and the threat to the animals' environment. Occasional spot illustrations by Zicot fill out the page design nicely, but Bloom's photos are the real attraction here; they will move kids with their plea for conservation. Hazel Rochman
