Focusing on the fertile but often overlooked period preceding Abstract Expressionism, this important volume sheds new light on a crucial stage in the evolution of American abstraction. Full-color plates reproduce vibrant, dynamic works from the 1930s and '40s by Josef Albers, Willem de Kooning, Burgoyne Diller, Suzy Frelinghuysen, Alexander Calder, and more than 50 other artists.
All 162 images are from the J. Donald Nichols Collection, remarkable for its exceptional breadth and diversity. Together, the images recreate the entire American abstract art scene of the '30s and '40s. Featured are works by members of the American Abstract Artists group and the Museum of Non-Objective Painting in New York, the Transcendental Painting Group in New Mexico, and the New Bauhaus school centered around Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in Chicago. "Regional Modernists" from Pennsylvania, California, the Pacific Northwest, and the deep South also provide fine examples of abstract art.

After attending Wake Forest University on an athletic scholarship, J. Donald Nichols played professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles. From there he went into the real estate development business. He has built more than 175 shopping centers throughout the country, and his company, JDN Realty, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Nichols first began collecting American Impressionist paintings in the 1970s, buying one painting as his personal reward for each shopping center he built. After ten years, he began looking for a new area in which to collect. The J. Donald Nichols Collection is now recognized as perhaps the finest collection of American abstract art of the 1930s and 1940s ever assembled.
Robert Knottis an actor, writer, and producer. His extensive list of stage, television, and film credits include the feature film Appaloosa based on the Robert B. Parker novel, which he adapted and produced with actor and producer Ed Harris. This is his first novel.

Hardcover. Black cloth, black ill. DJ. 210 pp. 162 color plates. This volume presents a partial catalog of 1930s and 1940s era abstract works that are in the art collection of J. Donald Nichols. Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. This art collection was on exhibition at the Wake Forest University Fine Arts Gallery, Winston-Salem, NC in the late 1990s. Familiar artists Willem de Kooning, Josef Albers, Arshile Gorky, and Stuart Davis are all included here. Artists in the collection are from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Women artists are quite strongly represented in the collection, including Russian born Esphyr Slobodkina. The J. Donald Nichols Collection is now recognized as perhaps the finest collection of American abstract art of the 1930s and 1940s ever assembled. (Abstract).
