Grade 4-8-Historically accurate books that combine readable accounts of events and explanations of customs. Unfortunately, there are no bibliographies, and no mention is made of methods used to derive some of the facts. The illustrations are largely undistinguished, full-color paintings, but a good mix of photographs of important sites, artifacts, and excavations is included. Moctezuma presents an overview of Aztec society, including the practice of human sacrifice and a less-than-flattering portrayal of Cortes. Pericles offers standard fare that is found in numerous titles on the ancient Greeks, spiced with a collection of anecdotes (they are attributed, but no sources are cited) that bring the city-states and their battles to life. Augustus survives a weak opening chapter written in the present tense. The rest of the book surveys Octavian's influences on the Roman Empire. Harald Hardrada mentions many modern word derivations that come from the Viking rule of Great Britain, a bit of trivia that may interest students. All of the books concentrate on their title characters but also examine the roles of women, slaves, soldiers, and foreigners in the societies at the time. Additional purchases.
