Reviews

Tour books of Civil War battlefields are something of a cottage industry, but this refreshing alternative guides visitors to lesser-known sites in Virginia and Maryland where the armies marched, fought, and camped. Civil War buffs know about Ball's Bluff, Germanna Ford, Bermuda Hundred, and City Point; Nesbitt's entertaining book tells them how to visit those sites by car or boat--the latter a most welcome bonus. More important sites, such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Richmond, are given summary treatment (or, as in the case of the Wilderness and Chancellorsville, passed over altogether), as befits the greater amount of information available about them. Nesbitt ( 35 Days to Gettysburg , LJ 9/1/92), has given readers who want to retrace the paths of the Blue and the Gray a valuable resource.
