About the Author:

David Liittschwager has worked with Richard Avedon and Mary Ellen Mark and collaborated on the Endangered Species Project. They are the authors of Here Today: Portraits of Our Vanishing Species (Chronicle Books, 1991).

Susan Middleton is chair of the photography department at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Her work has appeared in many publications, including Audubon, Natural History, and Smithsonian.

Middleton and Liittschwager (Here Today: Portraits of Our Vanishing Species, Chronicle, 1991) have photographed 100 of the plants and animals currently on North America's Endangered Species list. Some of the subjects are eminently charismatic: the Florida panther, red wolf, grizzly bear, and manatee. Others, such as the Furbish lousewort and the American burying beetle, probably would not elicit much of an emotional response from most people. But the authors have lavished as much care and attention on the pictures of the lowliest plants as on the majestic eagle, thus sending the message that each endangered species is unique, exquisite, and precious in the web of life.
