“L'Avare” would seem to be simultaneously a comedy of character and a comedy of manners. The character portrayal of the miser is quite sharp, but there is just as much interest in the relationships existing between parent and children, and between master and servants. The miser’s corruption, as well as many of the situations in the play, can be found in daily life. The play is successful because it has a very strong inner logic. The character of the miser is clearly delineated in the opening scenes, and if this is accepted, his speeches and reactions in the subsequent scenes are in agreement with the early characterization. In the purely technical sense of playwriting, “L’Avare” is one of Molière’s most interesting plays. Each scene is a dramatic situation in itself. As the plot unfolds and reveals the relationships existing between all the members of the family, we realize that Molière, whose personal life is not reflected in this play, has expressed boldly and courageously his thoughts on important sociological problems. This Barron’s Educational Series publication represents a new translation by Wallace Fowlie.
