After the arrival of his baby sister, Little Panda's mother begins to call him Big Panda, but it takes him a while to adjust to his new role

From Publishers Weekly:
In this homely-wise story a young panda confronts the perennial plight of siblings who find themselves unexpectedly "big" when another little one comes along. As Little Panda assumes a new name--Big Panda--the reader will sympathize with his ambivalence about the comfort of staying small and the responsibilities of growing up. Stimson spotlights subtle changes that require big adjustments--a slight wound does not rouse the same motherly attention, a story is rushed ("Stop!" cried Big Panda. "You're leaving out the best part"), and overtired Mom yawns too much. When Big Panda squeezes himself back into the baby's bed, a simple, realistic remedy proves best: " 'Come on, we're going out,' said Mom. 'We all need a change.' " Balance is reestablished as Big Panda pioneers his new role in the family. Although the generally warm and fuzzy watercolor illustrations resist excessive cuteness and make occasional bows to Chinese culture, there is little here that is unusual. But, as a package, the book will console and prod the newly "elder." Ages 4-7.

From Kirkus Reviews:
Once a new Little Panda is born, Mom begins to call the former Little Panda ``Big Panda,'' a role he gladly assumes. But though he pitches in with baby care and other chores, the new Big Panda misses the special attention he used to enjoy; he also notices that both he and his mother are tired. A playful day's outing with Little Panda cheers them both, though they're weary afterwards; and Big Panda discovers that, when Mom is too exhausted to read to him, he can read to his baby sister. Stimson's simple narrative nicely clarifies these human feelings in panda terms; but best here are the appealing illustrations of bright-eyed, pillow-soft pandas going about their very human activities. A good addition to a tirelessly augmented genre. (Picture book. 3-7) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
