Synopsis
Written by Newbery Medalist, National Book Award winner, and Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal recipient Katherine Paterson
Park can't figure out why his mother refuses to talk about his father who died in Vietnam. Park has no memory of him. But he is determined to find out the answers to his questions. When Park's search finally takes him to his gradfather's farm in rural Virginia, he meets obstacles beyond his imagining. Instead of being welcomed as the long lost heir, he is taunted by a young Vietnamese girl. Who is she, and what is she doing on the family farm? And will Park be able to accept the ultimate truth he has sought?

About the Author
Katherine Paterson is a legendary children's books author whose work has garnered many awards, including two Newbery medals (Bridge to Terabithia in 1978 and Jacob Have I Loved in 1981), two National Book Awards (The Master Puppeteer in 1977 and The Great Gilly Hopkins in 1979), and the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for her substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children. Some of her other award-winning books include Come Sing, Jimmy Jo, Flip-Flop Girl, Lyddie, and Stories of My Life. She served as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2010-2011 and is currently vice president of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance. She lives in Vermont.

Park, aka "Pork," age 11, lives in DC with his mother, who avoids any mention of his father, a Vietnam War casualty. Seeing himself as an Arthurian knight of old, Park resolves to discover more about his father, who becomes his longed-for Holy Grail. Narrator Jeff Woodman's voice nails the emotional urgency and embarrassed awkwardness of Park's pre-adolescent search. Moving flawlessly through a variety of accents (Round-Table, Vietnamese-American, and rural Virginia), Woodman steps effortlessly and convincingly into each character's shoes, revealing his or her quirks and foibles in this one-boy crusade for truth.
