Kindergarten-Grade 5 An articulate introduction for parents summarizes current knowledge regarding sexual abuse of children: the diverse nature of offenders; their motives and methods; why children are easily victimized; and what parents can do to create a protective environment without fostering paranoia. Case histories (in large type) follow. Each describes a dubious situation. Each shows a "correct" response by a child. Each ends with the question, "What would you do?" Two-way communication between parent and child is a valuable feature of this title. Chlad's Strangers (Childrens, 1982) is autocratic and directed to preschoolers who would be better served by the parent-created "protective environment" than taking responsibility for self-protection. Goldner's Dangers of Strangers (Dillon, 1983), with its horrifying illustrations, will stun even its slightly older audience, precipitating dependence and nightmares rather than nurturing independence and responsible decision-making. Unlike Wachter's No More Secrets for Me (Little, 1983), It's O.K. . . . is not intended for solitary reading. As a facilitator for thoughtful parents, It's O.K. . . . treads the middle ground between cynicism and optimism in dealing with a painful topic. While it intends to make children wary, it does not intend for parents to shift the full burden of responsibility for the personal, physical safety of children to the children themselves.
