From Library Journal:
Nuggets of practical legal advice on the First Amendment, defamation, privacy, publishing contracts, the Freedom of Information Act, and other related topics abound in this layperson's handbook written by veteran media law and literary property attorneys. However, the authors would have been well advised to have included a basic publishing contract form with their comments on standard terms, similar to chapters in Daniel Sitarz's The Desktop Publisher's Legal Handbook ( LJ 3/15/89) and Brad Bunnin and Peter Beren's The Writer's Legal Companion ( LJ 1/89), each of which is better organized and provides more adequate coverage of the mechanics of copyright law. Although Bunnin and Beren's volume is, except for a new chapter on the writer as taxpayer, only a superficial revision of their Author Law & Strategies (Nolo Pr., 1983), it is recommended over this book for general public and academic libraries; however, journalism and related specialized collections may also want this for its current case analyses or to complement Sitarz's book.

From Publishers Weekly:
In this useful reference book, two Washington, D.C., attorneys, who specialize in media, art and entertainment law, introduce writers, editors and publishers to recurring questions they are likely to face, and offer general answers to guide them in their work. Starting with an explanation of why the First Amendment is the cornerstone for the rights of American writers, they provide, for both professionals and amateurs, basic, practical information. Discussed are copyright, libel, defamation, obscenity, malice, privacy, confidentiality, prior restraint, post-publication sanctions, "Son of Sam" and shield laws, book and magazine contracts, protecting ideas, titles and moral rights, using public sources of information, doing business and tax planning and, very briefly, self-publishing.
