About the Author
James D. Squires began his newspaper career at the Nashville Tennessean in 1962, and later served as Washington bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune and as editor of the Orlando Sentinel and the Chicago Tribune. In 1992 he served as media adviser for Ross Perot's presidential campaign. His next book is entitled Mink Slide.

Squires--former Chicago Tribune editor whose Read All about It! (1993) critiqued newspapers' corporate managers--was Ross Perot's media adviser in 1992. In Hopewell Box, he provides "a case study in the power of the three most irrepressible forces in politics--class struggle, racism, and personal friendship." The focus is Nashville from the 1930s to the 1970s. The chief characters are the author's grandfather, Dave White, the "enforcer" for the Robinson-Sheridan-Garfinckle machine, and Squires himself, who started out as a reporter for the Nashville Tennessean, which crusaded for decades against that machine. Squires' memoir has more than local appeal because of Nashville's central role in civil rights history. The machine long sought African Americans' support; the Tennessean championed elimination of the poll tax; John Lewis (now a Georgia congressman) led the city's soda fountain sit-ins, and Reverend Martin Luther King wrangled with its mayor; and the 1962 Supreme Court case that established the principle of "one man, one vote" (Baker v. Carr) was fought by Nashville attorney Tommy Osborn (who later defended Jimmy Hoffa against federal charges and was jailed and disbarred for jury tampering). Lively, vivid political history.
