Anthony H. Cordesman is currently a senior fellow and codirector of the Middle East Program, and director of the Middle East Program at CSIS, a military analyst for ABC News and adjunct professor of national security studies at Georgetown University. He has served in senior positions in the office of the secretary of defense, NATO, and the U.S. Senate. Abraham R. Wagner is an independent defense consultant in the area of national security problems working with Science Applications International, Inc., as well as several federal agencies. He has written extensively on Third World military technologies and appeared on ABC News, the BBC, National Public Radio, and CBN to provide expert analysis of the Persian Gulf War. Anthony H. This three-volume study examines the complex and rapidly changing nature of warfare as demonstrated in the world's major post-Vietnam conflicts. These are not action books for the combat buff, but extremely analytical case studies for the military professional, dense with acronyms and military jargon. A chronology of events for each conflict is followed by an exhaustive study of the weaponry (especially electronic warfare), tactics, and leadership used throughout. The emphasis is upon system effectiveness, and the intelligent use of combined arms. Although leadership and command factors are studied, the authors' thesis seems to be that applied technology determines final victory. The books cover air, sea, and ground combat factors with equal thoroughness. Each volume has its particular strengths. The Arab-Israeli study presents a painstaking statistical analysis of air warfare, but is devoted mostly to ground combat. The Afghan work reveals surprising knowledge of Soviet systems. A very useful conclusion discusses misconceptions and future trends and provides an overall lessons-learned epilog. Very highly recommended to specialist collections.
