Red cloth is clean and unmarked, black titles to spine, corners and spine head and heel lightly scuffed, sewn binding tight, solid and square. Pages faintly toned, quite clean, no marks of any kind. Andre Gide, 1869-1951, and Roman Rolland, 1866-1944, two French writers who lived and worked during ther same time period, both experienced three wars--they grew up in the period between the Franco-Prussian War and World War I--and they "could not bear each other". Harris explores this dislike, the whys and wherefores of its intensity, at least partially from the 6 letters from Gide to Rolland and the 5 from Rolland to Gide, apparently their entire personal ocrrespondence to each other. They did come to some common ground of agreement with the advent of Russian communism after the revolution of 1917 and Harris explains their positions. 282 pages with French Texts, Bibliography and Index. 5.75 x 8.5 inches. 1973, Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA.
