Bibliography. Index. 260 pp. Publisher's blurb from front flap, "United States forests stand at the center of a persistent supply crisis: on the one hand, real prices of our strategic wood products continually rising, and the experts calling for intensified resource management and utilization as remedies; on the other hand, an articulate body of opinion advocating the enlargement of wilderness and developed recreation areas and stressing other nonmember uses of our forests. It was in view of these demands and controversies that a nationwide policy conference with representative from government, business, and conservation and consumer groups was held in late 1970 under the sponsorship of the State University of New York. This book, a result of that conference, brings together the ideas of 22 authorities. Their papers explore three major areas of concern. First, where we stand: What is the forest-resource position of the United States today? And what is the timber-supply issue? Second, where we are headed: What are the forest resource prospects for the immediate future and the longer term? What are the opportunities, for improving the timber supply? Finally, policies and programs: What have been the United States forest policies? What policies and programs will meet the forest-resource issue of the future? Of special note is the final chapter- "Epilogue 1971-1972"- which updates current topics including the clearcutting issue, the President's economic stabilization program, progress with forest-related legislation in the 92nd and 93rd Congresses, and the 1972 Nader study of the Forest Service. The discussion. and ideas presented in TIMBER! will prove timely reading for all persons, both professionals and Laymen, concerned with problems of environmental conversation. Seller Inventory # 2094
