The reason for this book was summarized by a student upon completion of the course for which it was to relieve tunnel vision. Both the author's research and teaching have helped in formulating the topics of the book. Students have had input throughout the entire process. Questions were asked and answered through long-term searching in the literature and through application of what was found. Even though references cited are few, they have been utilized, internalized, and applied. The book format has been planned to encourage the viewing reference of the whole form. The first two chapters outline the concept and the ground rules required for application. The third chapter develops patterns of viewing the whole. Succeeding chapters discuss the visual relations that influence the whole, the definers and modifiers of visual parts. The visual form thus is investigated in terms of its potential visual relations and their interpretation, inherent in the context of the whole, the apparel-body construct. These visual relationships influence the process and the outcome of organizing, as discussed in chapter nine. The last chapter summarizes the approach and its usefulness in professions requiring the skills of the educated viewer.
