About the Author
J. Michael Dash is Professor of Francophone Literature and Chairman of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of the West Indies. He has authored five previous books and translated Edouard Glissant's Caribbean Discourse: Selected Essays.

Beginning in nineteenth-century Haiti and ending in today's Martinique, Dash analyzes he achievements and shortcomings of some of the most important literary efforts in their attempts to come to terms with the region's characteristics- plantation origins, unfinished modernity, sociocultural heterogeneity, liminality, and archipelagic instability.
