In this companion volume to Inviting Children's Response to Literature, the editors have compiled a list of K-8 books from the last 13 years that are notable for their use of language. In a series of essays, members of the National Council of Teachers of English offer techniques and methods for encouraging children to respond to literature as "wordcrafters" who expand their writing and thinking skills in response to language they encounter in reading. Following each essay is a list of professional resources and children's literature cited. The book concludes with essays from 38 children's authors who discuss the creative process. Though the book suffers from the lack of an index, teachers in grades K-8 and teacher-educators will appreciate its practical suggestions for including quality literature in the classroom. School libraries with professional collections and academic and public libraries with strong collections in education will find this book a worthwhile purchase.?Ann Joslin, Erie County (PA) Public Library

McClure and Kristo's Inviting Children's Responses to Literature (1994) did an excellent job of talking about individual books and how to use them with children. In this much expanded companion volume, members of NCTE's Children's Literature Assembly discuss 10 years of notable trade books. There are essays on particular genres and on multicultural issues, including language diversity, storytelling, international books, and using African American books in the classroom. As in Book Links magazine, the focus is on how to bring the best books to elementary-and middle-school students and on how to link books by all kinds of themes. In a final section nearly 40 children's writers, from Aliki and Avi to Valerie Worth and Jane Yolen, talk about how they use language to write their stories. There are useful references with each essay, and a final full bibliography of notable books chosen by the NCTE committee over a decade. These discussions show how to make books a part of children's lives. Hazel Rochman
