In The State of Jewish Studies, contributors describe the key points of controversy and concern that currently engage scholars in most areas of Judaic research. Respondents discuss the contributor's views, marking out areas of disagreement and delineating avenues for further research and debate.
Editors Shaye Cohen and Edward Greenstein have compiled papers from a conference at the Jewish Theological Seminary held to celebrate its centennial as well as to mark the growth and maturity of Jewish Studies over the previous twenty years. Titled "The State of Jewish Studies'" the conference focused on methodological and interpretative questions and examined many areas of scholarship. The editors also supplemented the volume with specifically commissioned papers.
