An illustrated cookbook of recipes gathered by the Detroit Institute of Arts. The title for this lavishly illustrated cookbook from the Detroit Institute of Arts - A Culinary Collection - has two meanings. It refers, of course, to the wide variety of recipes, gathered from the museum's volunteers, staff, and friends, but it is also a description of the art, all from the museum's permanent collection, that illustrates the book. All of the artworks, whether painting, sculpture, or decorative art, are connected in some fashion to food - the growing, preparing, serving, or eating of it. Taken together, these two "culinary collections" provide a sumptuous feast for all the senses. The more than 140 recipes are arranged by dinner course, starting with appetizers, then moving on to soups, salads, main course dishes (of fish, chicken, or meat), and finishing with glorious desserts. The chapter openings and many of the recipes have been paired with related illustrations - a lithograph of triangle thins starts the section on appetizers, for example, while porcelain tureens in the shape of a rooster and a hen introduce the poultry recipes. Pickle and relish recipes appear next to an ornate eighteenth-century pickle stand, and an apple pie recipe is appropriately matched with a painting of an apple orchard. A Culinary Collection will be a staple for any chef and for those interested in the artwork showcased at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
