Bardwick, professor of clinical psychology at the University of California, San Diego, defines the Plateauing Trap as the inability to acknowledge the fact that one's life has stabilized, or plateaued. She claims further that the fear and despair that this phenomenon creates can be conquered. Although specifically geared to the corporate environment, her advice can easily be applied to most personal situations as well. The key to overcoming the three kinds of plateauing (structural, content, and, most critically, life plateauing) is recognizing that everyone plateaus and that through self-assessment and realistic goal-setting growth can still occur.
