Considerable commentary has been written about Saint John's Abbey and University during its formative, developing, and maturing periods over more than one hundred and thirty years. Fr. Hilary Thimmesh, president of Saint John's University, suggested that some contemporary essays and comments be assembled in a volume that could be available as a record for interested readers. He asked Robert L. Spaeth, then dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Saint John's University, and me to invite contributors and edit such a volume which was published as A Sense of Place: Saint John's of Collegeville. The thirty-one contributors to this first volume all had associations with the life and ministries of both our Collegeville monastery and its schools...Coleman J. Barry

Much has been written about Saint John's Abbey and University during its one hundred and thirty year history. The latest work, the widely read A Sense of Place: Saint John's of Collegeville, provided the perspective of those who have shared for a time the experience of Saint John's Abbey and University: oblates, alumni, faculty, friends. This second volume is an insider's look, an examination of Saint John's by the Benedictines who call it home. It captures the ambience of this center of scholarship, liturgical renewal, and ecumenism: that sense of place, of community, of God, which is more easily experienced than explained.
