From the Inside Flap:
This Festschrift for one of the most influential international and ecumenical theologians in the second half of this century focuses on the topic of Tradition as Tavard's own work over the past forty years has influenced the discussion. The contributors reflect on ?tradition? and ?Tradition,? in all their connotations and plurality, in a four-way conversation or ?quadrilog? between Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, and Lutheran perspectives. The order of the essays is first to present the prominent historical figures in the history of the Western Church to address the topic of Tradition up through the early part of the twentieth century. Three essays on Anglican/Roman Catholic ecumenism and one on the 1963 World Conference on Faith and Order (at which Tavard was one of five official Roman Catholic observers) follow. After an essay presenting a historical-literary overview, the volume continues with two systematic essays, one on philosophical tradition, one on the tradition of artistic image, and one on Scripture and canonization. A complete bibliography of Tavard's works to date concludes the volume. The scope, variety, and international makeup of the contributors?as well as the quality of the essays?are a tribute to George Tavard and a testimony to his continuing ability to inspire fellow scholars and students alike. This volume is unique in its range embracing both historical and contemporary studies as well as biblical, theological, philosophical, and artistic approaches. It is a work which can enrich our reflections on the important issues of what is communicated as the church proclaims the Gospel and the ways by which that communication takes place.? Worship Works
