The 1985 North American Print Conference explored the diversity of study of printed imagery, with two major themes: the alliance with popular culture and printmaking as a fine art. In these selected papers, the popular aspect is seen in Masonic symbolism, literary flowering, and book illustration, industrialization, and factory production of lithographic images; group movements and specific artists represent creation of the "fine print" and its audience. The relation of these two traditions has created a vigorous art form. The increasing scholarly interest in graphic arts is well served here, with diverse methods, a broad range of topic, and a high level of research skill and literary style.
