A brief overview of how different animals protect themselves through camouflage and mimicry of other animals

Gr 5-8 Using a two-page spread to discuss a topic, the authors have made generous use of good quality diagrams and sometimes excellent color photographs. The well-written texts are lucid and enjoyable to read. Reluctant readers will be attracted by the colorful content. Birds of Prey contains some dramatic shots of birds attacking prey. It is a commendable coverage of behavior patterns and physical features of these formidable birds. A nice complement to this book is David Burnie's Bird (Knopf, 1988), which contains a superb collection of photographs comparing anatomy, eggs, and nests of all kinds of birds. Mimicry and Camouflage also presents a well-illustrated, intriguing look at the endless use of color, shape, and pattern for natural camouflagewhether to hide, attract, or warn. The most fascinating is Animal Vision. In addition to the expected discussion of the eye's anatomical structure and physiology, it explores the endless differences and oddities of vision in the animal worldcuriosities such as crocodiles that cry (crocodile tears?) to rid their bodies of excess salt and the horned-toad that squirts blood from the corners of its eyes. Any of these titles will make useful and interesting fare for library collections. Cynthia M. Sturgisgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie,
