The third in a series of regional encyclopedias (the earlier two are The Encyclopedia of the South, LJ 1/86, and The Encyclopedia of New England) , this work covers biographic, historic, economic, cultural, and political topics relating to eight states comprising America's heartland. Carpenter has written dozens of state or regional histories, mostly for young readers. Many of the 2500 subjects treated by this source are covered in less detail, or entirely omitted, by general encyclopedias. Appropriately, broad topics, e.g., "coal," are examined only in relation to this region. Therein lies the advantage of this encyclopedia as a quick reference to things Midwestern. Some features include clearly displayed statistics (current through the mid-1980s) for states and major cities; cross references to related articles; and black-and-white reproductions (many of paintings depicting local scenes), though these are partially indistinct. Suitable for school, public, and academic collections.
