Thoroughly revised and updated, The Facts On File Dictionary of Marine Science contains over 2,500 entries-500 new to this edition-dealing with the basic vocabulary of marine science. Revised information on time scales, an updated chronology of significant events, and a taxonomic classification of living organisms are also included. New entries include: abyssal rocks, Luis Alvarez, celestial navigation, giant squid, global warming, microfossils, off-shore drilling, phosphorescence, saw sharks, and zoantharia.

This dictionary gives brief definitions of geographical areas, marine plants and animals, seafloor features, scientific terms, and biographical sketches related to oceanography. But the book's intended audience and focus are vague. Very general terms (atom, bird) are included, yet the definitions are in specialized terminology impossible for lay readers to understand. Definitions are also inconsistent. For example, organisms are defined under their common names; the scientific name or group is not always given, even when the name commonly refers to a particular animal. Some definitions are unclear, others are inaccurate. In addition, there are biographical entries for researchers only remotely connected to marine science, such as Copernicus and Cuvier. A much better choice is Donald Groves and Lee Hunt's Ocean World Encyclopedia ( LJ 6/1/80). Susan Klimley, Columbia Univ. Libs.
