Reviews

Gr. 6^-9. This collective biography in the new Global Profiles series contains a brief introduction defining the concept of basic human rights and chronicling the post^-World War II rise of the modern human rights movement, followed by concise (10-to 12-page) profiles of 10 current human rights activists, among them four Nobel Peace Prize winners. Those profiled include familiar figures such as Mother Theresa and Desmond Tutu, as well as individuals whom YAs may not recognize (Fang Lizhi, Rigoberta Menchu). The profiles begin with short, vivid scenes that will pique readers' interest and continue with necessary historical background, basic biographical information, and brief discussions of major achievements. Many high-school students will find Gale's Contemporary Heroes and Heroines and ABC-CLIO's Heroes of Conscience of more help in beginning research on current human rights leaders, but middle-and junior-high-school students will find this work highly useful as a jumping-off point for report research. To be illustrated with black-and-white photographs, the book contains boxed quotations, chronologies, and brief, annotated reading lists (print only) for research. Jean Franklin
