A to Z of Chemists is the first volume of a series from Facts On File called Notable Scientists. The author, Oakes, has also written the Encyclopedia of World Scientists (Facts On File, 2001) and the International Encyclopedia of Women Scientists (Facts On File, 2002). This volume was designed for high-school through early college students and is also a good resource for general readers who are interested in chemistry. It covers more than 150 chemists from the first century A.D. through the present who have made significant contributions to their field, as determined by consulting established reference works such as the Dictionary of Scientific Biography (Scribner, 1970-1980). Among the chemists who are covered are St. Elmo Brady, Alfred Nobel, Linus Pauling, and Maxine Singer.

The volume is arranged by surname, with cross-references to other scientists included in the book. Entries range in length from 750 to 1,200 words and focus on the scientists' work and the scientific achievements that place them as leaders in the field. Some black-and-white photos are scattered throughout the text. Appended matter includes listings of the entries by country of birth, country of major scientific activity, and year of birth; and a chronological chart by year of birth. The volume is completed by a bibliography and an excellent index.

Although there are numerous reference sources that supply biographies of scientists, there are few that cover this particular area. The older, four-volume A History of Chemistry (St. Martin's, 1961) and The Biographical Dictionary of Scientists: Chemists (P. Bedrick, 1984) are ones to mention, but this new volume is more current as well as being both easy to read and fairly comprehensive. It is recommended particularly for high schools and undergraduate collections as well as public library reference collections. RBB
