Alphabetically arranged entries offer cross-referenced information on world writers, including biographical information, overviews of their works, and critical analyses of some.

Literature curriculums from high school to college are including more writers from outside the British-American sphere. This volume, a companion to Facts On File's Encyclopedia of British Writers: 19th and 20th Centuries [RBB D 15 03], is edited by a professor of comparative literature at Rutgers University. It includes A-Z entries for approximately 300 African, Asian, Australian, Canadian, Caribbean, European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern authors of poetry, fiction, drama, essay, and autobiography. All of the writers in the book have had works anthologized in textbooks or have been studied in high-school literature courses. There are also articles on topics such as Futurism and Magical realism.
Author entries profile Margaret Atwood, Thomas Mann, Guy de Maupassant, Mishima Yukio, Octavio Paz, Wolo Soyinka, Rabindranath Tagore, and Leo Tolstoy, to name a few. Each entry contains a brief biography, critical analysis, a short (in some cases single item) list of major works in chronological order, and a bibliography of works about the author. These bibliographies are brief in order to encourage students to delve further into a particular author's work while not overwhelming them. Other features include an author time line that is simply a list of dates and authors included in this work, a list of the writers by geographical area, a selected bibliography of further readings not included at the end of each entry, and an extensive index.
There is considerable overlap with numerous other reference tools. Large literature series, such as the Wilson Authors Series and various publications from Gale and Salem Press, also cover world authors. Encyclopedia of World Writers: 19th and 20th Centuries is a worthwhile purchase for public, high-school, and undergraduate libraries seeking a compact, convenient introduction. RBB

Grade 9 Up--Covering approximately 300 writers, this broad overview offers a sweeping introduction to hundreds of writers and movements--some almost completely unknown in the U.S. The writing is clear, and the alphabetically arranged entries are short and to the point. Each one begins with a biographical sketch, followed by a brief discussion of important works. Longer entries, like those on Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky, Stendhal, or Muhammad Iqbal, also include a slightly more in-depth section of "Critical Analysis." The list of further reading that comes at the end of each essay is almost miserly (often only a single book about the author). In addition, there are no illustrations to add a glimpse of the writer's face, costume, and/or milieu. Appendixes include a limited "Authors' Timeline," a list of authors and movements arranged geographically, and an 18-page selected bibliography. Its alphabetical arrangement by the last name of the author makes it almost impossible for students to locate information by subject. Despite being a bit sloppy around the edges, this title sheds light on the glorious, multifaceted world of literature.--Herman Sutter, Saint Agnes Academy, Houston, TX
