Grade 6-12-- An objective, comprehensive, and detailed history from biblical times to the present. Included are the basic beliefs of Judaism, the ethical laws that evolved from them, observances, holidays and festivals, etc. There is a fine explanation of concepts and terms commonly used about and by Jews. Sidebars of relevant information appear where appropriate; biblical quotes are integrated into the narrative. However, there are some minor inaccuracies. The plethora of black-and-white photographs of ultra-Orthodox males gives a stereotypical image of contemporary Jews. Also, the authors neglect to mention the particular type of Orthodox Jewish movement that they portray in these photographs. The holidays are not shown in the order in which they occur according to the Jewish lunar calendar; Hasidism is correctly described in the text, but as defined in the glossary is only barely related to the same word. Comparable books are Stuart E. Rosenberg's Judaism (Anti-Defamation League, n.d.), Michael Fishbane's Judaism (Harper, 1985), and Nicholas de Lange's Judaism (Oxford, 1986). The excellent books from some denominational and Jewish presses usually assume prior knowledge. --Marcia Posner, Federation of New York and the Jewish Book Council, New York City
