About the Author:
With over 50 history books in print, Angus is a widely recognised and much-published historian. While he specialises in military and naval history he has also written numerous more general history books, designed to make the subject more accessible to a wider audience. Uniquely he has been able to draw on his expertise as a senior museum curator who has worked on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as on his academic training as a historian and as a maritime archaeologist. His latest book is a full-length biography: Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate, which is published by Wiley & Sons. of New York (June 2006) Angus is also just finished writing a history of the Allied landings at Salerno in September 1943 for the British publisher Pen & Sword, and he is currently working on a new project, with the working title of Supership: The Quest for the Renaissance Battleship. Angus lives in Edinburgh, in Scotland.
From Booklist:
This is the latest in a series that began with the 1940s, and as in the earlier volumes, there is coverage of national and international events that occurred on each and every day throughout the decade, in this case from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 1999. Ten categories organize daily events--one titled "World Affairs," four on world regions excluding the U.S., three focusing on the U.S. (e.g., "U.S. Economy & Environment"), one on science, and one on "Culture, Leisure, & Lifestyle." Each spread covers, on average, five to seven days. Dates are listed on the left and right margins, and categories are arranged across the top, with events listed below the appropriate category. The font is small, entries are succinct, and each page is packed with facts and figures. Multiple events under the same day and category are separated by ellipses.

Users seeking events that occurred on a known date need only turn the page to the correct date. For those looking for an event but uncertain of the date, volume 2 contains a name index and a separate subject index. Instead of page numbers, dates and column letters are given (e.g., Boutros-Ghali, Boutros 1995 Mar 31A). For multiple entries on a single subject or name, entries are arranged under various subtopics. For example, subtopics under China include accidents and disasters in, arms sales by, civil strife in, foreign trade, sports, and more. Unfortunately, the slight indentation of subtopics hampers quick identification of main topics.

Additional features include a summary of events by year and also by decade. Gale's American Decades: 1990-1999 (2001) goes into greater depth on selected national events and people but lacks daily coverage and international scope. These features, along with ease of use and the ability to view events in context and identify trends, make Day by Day: The Nineties the event chronology tool of choice. Recommended for school, public, and academic libraries. Stephen Fadel
