About the Author:
Thom Holmes is a writer specializing in natural history subjects and dinosaurs. He was the publications director of The Dinosaur Society and the editor of its newsletter, Dino Times, the world's only monthly publication devoted to news about dinosaur discoveries.
From Booklist:
This entry in the Prehistoric Earth series discusses how the changing ecological and geological conditions in the Early and Late Cretaceous periods created opportunities for the expansion of dinosaurs. It was also these very climatic and geologic shifts that contributed to the eventual extinction of large and small dinosaurs. Divided into four sections, the book covers such subjects as sauropods, theropod giants, feathered dinosaurs, the origins of birds, iguanodontids, hadrosaurs, and pterosaurs. The final section of the book also examines non-dinosaurian reptiles of the Mesozoic Era. Holmes, a specialist in natural-history subjects, is thorough, clear, and informative in explaining theories relating to the mass extinction of dinosaurs and other creatures of the time. Chapters conclude with a list of several summary points. Glossary words appear in boldface. Appealing in format and design, the text is supported with abundant color illustrations, charts, and graphs. Appendixes include extensive chapter notes and suggestions for further reading. Other entries in the series cover the earliest life forms and the rise of humans. Grades 9-12. --Ed Sullivan
