CAROL TURKINGTON is a health and psychology writer. Among her more than twenty-five books are 12 Steps to a Better Memory, The Encyclopedia of Memory and Memory Disorders, and The Brain Encyclopedia. A former newspaper writer and editor, she spent three years as a medical writer/editor at Duke University Medical Center and five years as senior writer in clinical psychology for the American Psychological Association in Washington, D.C.
Approximately 400,000 Americans have multiple sclerosis (MS). Each year, 10,000 will be diagnosed with this disease. Despite research that has uncovered much about possible causes, there is still a great deal to learn about managing and effectively treating MS.
The Encyclopedia of Multiple Sclerosis, authored by a medical writer, a nurse who manages the MS Clinic at Royal Brisbane Hospital in Australia, and two clinical educators from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, provides a basic overview of the disease. More than 500 alphabetical entries cover the etiology (Autoimmune disease), symptoms (Doll's eye sign), treatment (Disease-modifying agents), causes (Environmental triggers), and lifestyle issues (Driving) related to MS. Entries range in length from a brief paragraph to several pages. They include events, such as the MS Walk, and celebrities, such as Joan Didion and Lena Horne, who are living with MS. Five appendixes list "Organizations," "National MS Society-Affiliated Clinical Facilities," "Clinical Trials in Multiple Sclerosis," "State Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society," and "International Multiple Sclerosis Societies." A glossary defines terms used in the text.
This is a very good, reasonably priced source for public and consumer health collections. Although it lacks the depth of The Gale Encyclopedia of Neurological Disorders (2004), it provides a basic understanding of the disease and useful referral information. Barbara Bibel
