Synopsis

More than 800 unsolved cases that continue to baffle investigators.

Praise for the previous hardcover edition:
“...[a] worthy addition to any collection...The writing here is crisp and clean, offering plenty of detail without melodrama.”—VOYA

When it comes to crime, truth is often stranger than fiction. Many of the cases that have stumped investigators are among the strangest on record. Whether due to a lack of leads and evidence or to bizarre and baffling circumstances, many of the mysteries presented in this book have remained unsolved despite years of investigation by qualified law enforcement agents. Several of them have become legendary and drawn the attention of amateur sleuths around the world, but still they remain open.

Written in a straightforward, A-to-Z format and featuring 69 black-and-white photographs, The Encyclopedia of Unsolved Crimes, Second Edition presents criminal mysteries from the 19th and 20th centuries, including murders, robberies, missing persons, kidnappings, serial killers, and more. More than 800 cases in total are examined, presenting readers with the facts, evidence, and theories connected with each one. Each entry documents the events of the crime, the victims, the alleged perpetrators, the key points of the police investigation, and the current status of the case. More than 90 new cases have been added for this edition, and many others have been updated to reflect recent developments.

Cases covered include:

  • The Anthrax murders
  • The Black Dahlia
  • Bob Crane
  • Iranian Chain Murders
  • Jimmy Hoffa
  • Natalee Holloway
  • Jack the Ripper
  • Madeline McCann
  • Tylenol Murders
  • Zodiac Killer.

From Booklist

Written by the author of such works as The Encyclopedia of Kidnappings (2002) and The Encyclopedia of Robberies, Heists, and Capers (2002), this second edition presents the strange truths of criminal cases from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that have stumped investigators. Newton defines an “unsolved case” as being one that either has no suspect identified, a known offender who cannot be charged for lack of concrete evidence, or a miscarriage of justice. The book has been updated to include 93 new unsolved crimes, omit crimes from the first edition that have been solved, and add information to preexisting entries. Entries are arranged alphabetically by the individual victim’s name, event, popular nickname of an unidentified offender, geographic location, or recognized media label for multiple victims. Cross-references and an index assist users in locating information on their crimes of interest. A bibliography of sources at the end of the volume encourage one to look for more information on unsolved crimes. Suitable for college or public libraries, this book will entertain and inform any mystery or crime aficionado with factual and well-researched information. --Sara Marcus
